CRISC Certification 2026: Domains, Salary, Eligibility & Career Guide

The Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC)® is the leading credential for IT risk management — and as cyber regulation tightens worldwide and boards take risk seriously, it has become one of the highest-paying risk certifications you can earn.

What is the CRISC certification?

CRISC is awarded by ISACA and recognized globally. It validates your ability to identify, assess, respond to, and monitor enterprise IT risk and design effective controls. CRISC certifies professionals who can govern risk and report it in terms leaders and boards understand.

Why pursue CRISC in 2026?

  • Among the highest-paying risk certifications worldwide.
  • Demand surging as cyber regulation tightens across BFSI, insurance, and pharma.
  • Risk has gone to the boardroom — creating demand for professionals who can govern it.
  • Pairs powerfully with CISA, CISM, ISO 27001, and NIST frameworks.

CRISC exam pattern

150 multiple-choice questions in 4 hours, scored 200–800 with 450 to pass. Scenario-based questions focused on practical risk decision-making.

CRISC syllabus: the 4 domains

  1. Governance (~26%) — risk governance, strategy alignment, risk appetite and tolerance, policies, and the three lines model.
  2. IT Risk Assessment (~20%) — risk identification, analysis, scenario development, and evaluation.
  3. Risk Response & Reporting (~32%) — risk treatment, control design and ownership, KRIs/KCIs, monitoring, and stakeholder reporting.
  4. Information Technology & Security (~22%) — IT principles, emerging technology, security concepts, and resilience.

Risk Response & Reporting is the single heaviest domain, closely followed by Governance — prioritize both.

CRISC eligibility

Requires 3 years of experience in IT risk management and information systems control, across at least two of the four domains (including Governance or Risk Response). You can pass the exam first and complete experience within five years.

CRISC salary in India (2026)

  • Mid-level: ₹12–18 LPA
  • Senior (risk manager / GRC lead): ₹20–25 LPA+
  • Leadership roles: higher, especially in BFSI and consulting

Career paths after CRISC

IT risk analyst, risk manager, GRC lead, control manager, and resilience lead — with progression toward head of risk and enterprise risk leadership. Natural complement to CISA and CISM.

How to pass CRISC on your first attempt: a study plan

  1. Prioritize Risk Response & Reporting and Governance — together over half the exam.
  2. Master the risk lifecycle — from identification through assessment, response, and reporting.
  3. Learn KRIs and KCIs cold — monitoring and reporting concepts appear frequently.
  4. Practice scenario questions — the exam tests applied judgement.
  5. Take full-length mocks in the 4-hour format and review every miss.

Frequently asked questions

CRISC vs CISA vs CISM? CRISC suits risk and control professionals; CISA suits auditors; CISM suits security managers. Many professionals collect more than one.

Is CRISC technical? Risk-focused, not coding-based — it tests how you govern, assess, respond to, and report on IT risk.

Can I take the exam before I have 3 years of experience? Yes — pass first and complete experience within five years.

Which pays more, CRISC or CISA? Comparable; CRISC tends to command a premium in dedicated risk and GRC roles.
